Getting Started

So you want to learn how to ride a motorcycle/moped!  Ok, you will first need to apply for your Northern Ireland/UK provisional licence.  You can apply for your provisional licence when you are 16, but you are restricted to riding a moped until you are 17.  For further details visit www.dvlni.go.uk

The provisional licence application form (DL1) is available from your local post office or your Auto Tech Approved Motorcycle Instructor (AMI).  We recommend you apply about 3 months before your 16th birthday for mopeds/17th birthday for motorcycles you should then receive licence back in time to book your driving lessons for your birthday.

You will also need to check your eyesight.  You need to be able to read a standard number plate from 20.5 metres (approximately 5 car lengths).  If you wear glasses or contact lenses you must wear them whilst driving.

You can study for your Theory and Hazard Perception Test before your first lesson.  Theory and Hazard Perception Test Training DVD’s are available from all good book shops or online.  If you prefer you can study whilst taking lessons where you can receive you free training DVD’s from you Auto Tech Driving Instructor.  Check out your progress with a free Theory Test at www.theory-test.co.uk
Auto Tech Driving Instructors will give you all the assistance you need to enable you to pass your Theory and Hazard Perception test.

From the end of February 2011 you will have to complete a course of Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) before you can ride on the public road.  CBT can only be delivered by AMI’s.

You must pass both the off-road and on- road tests within two years of passing your theory and hazard perception tests.  In addition you must hold a current CBT completion certificate when taking both tests

CBT certificates have a two year life.  If you do not pass your off-road and on-road tests within this two year period you will have to complete another CBT course.

First Lesson – What to expect

L Plate

Most people are nervous about getting on a motorcycle for the first time, but don’t worry your Auto Tech AMI will soon put you at ease.  You will be introduced to CBT as laid down by Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA).  After that you will then take motorcycle lessons for both your off-road and on-road tests in manageable stages that best suits to enable you to pass your motorcycle test.  We would advise you to have one or two lessons per week.

CBT

Element A
Introduction to CBT
This element is an introduction to CBT.  It will take the form of a discussion.  Your instructor will explain the basics and not get involved in complicated issues.

Element B
Practical on-site training
This element provides you with an introduction to the motorcycle.  You will not start riding the motorcycle in this element although you’ll get hands-on training.

Element C
Practical on-site riding
In this element you will begin riding a motorcycle.  By the time you’ve finished this element you’ll have developed enough basic skills to allow you to ride a motorcycle under control.

Element D
Practical on-road training
Having carried out your theory and practical training off-road, your instructor will now prepare you for the on-road element of CBT.  The knowledge you gain now will be the foundation on which to build your motorcycling career.

Element E
Practical on-road riding
This is the final element of the CBT course.  You’ll ride out on the road accompanied by, and in radio contact with, your instructor (and possibly with one other trainee), for at least two hours.

Intensive Motorcycle Courses

If you want to learn to ride a motorcycle as soon as possible then maybe our intensive courses are for you

Instead of months of learning to ride you can complete your motorcycle tests in weeks!
Your level of motorcycle experience will determine how many off-road and on-road lessons will make you your intensive course.  Each intensive riding course can be tailored to suit your personal requirements and fit around your work or other commitments.

Following completion of your CBT course your Auto Tech AMI will advise you on the number of lessons you may require for an intensive course.  Intensive courses can be arranged over two or three day periods so as to fit in with test booking schedules.  You can discuss this and plan your motorcycle course with your AMI on completion of CBT.
